Hi there! I’m Zoe, I'm based in Birmingham - U.K, and I combine my skills in needle felting, photography and papercraft to make unique little artworks of pop culture characters. Below are some of my favourite pieces but can easily browse all my previous work on Instagram. If you’d like me to bring my woolly powers to a project of yours please do get in touch!e-mail - [email protected]
How can I get a sculpture commission, and how much will it cost?I normally announce when I’m available for personal commissions through Twitter, so please check that if it’s convenient. However you can always e-mail too! :)Please send an image of the character you would like produced. I’m happy to work from your original designs or established characters, but they need to be in a cartoony style in keeping with my previous work. Right now I’m not able to reinterpret pets, humans or realistic/gritty designs. The more angles of reference you can provide the more accurate I can be, but I’m quite good at extrapolating from what’s provided so don’t feel you need a comprehensive turnaround of your character. Each commission takes 7-10 days, but I’ll let you know a finish date once we’ve agreed on everything, as there’s often a small queue. The price will vary depending on detail, but below are some ballpark examples to give you an idea. These prices are for private individuals commissioning for personal use only. I think that covers everything, thanks for reading all that, and I really look forward to seeing what we end up making together!
Are these computer renders?
Haha, I love it when people think this, but no, these are real physical objects. Having a lot of light in the room when photographing and bouncing it around carefully can make it look like a render though. What even IS needle felting?
Needle felting is essentially using a special barbed needle to convince loose wool fibres to bond to each other. It’s a slow process but I think the end result has a very unique aesthetic! How do I keep my needlefelt in good condition? Please handle them gently, as really they are sculptures not toys.
Keep them away from pets, the needle felted texture is particularly enjoyable for cats to ‘unmake’.
If any really long strands appear, give them a little snip with sharp scissors instead of tugging them out.How can I get my needle felting project to be smooth?
I think 90% of it is time! It really takes a very long time for all the wool to compact sufficiently for it to be smooth. As reference I spend easily 20-30 hours on each sculpture. The second most important thing would be finishing with a very fine needle, I use a Twisted Fine #42. Lastly there is a slight ‘knack’ to how you poke, but it’s hard to describe and is something you’ll just get a feeling for! Think shallow, gently, and evenly.
